چکیده

Ceria submonolayers consisting of nanosized 2D islands on a Cu(111) surface have been prepared by oxidation of the nucleating Ce submonolayer (0.7 ML) and characterized using XPS and STM. The reducibility of the resulting well-defined CeO2 x/Cu(111) model system of the ‘‘inverse supported catalyst” type was studied by XPS using CO as reducing agent. In order to investigate the contribution of the substrate in the redox process, the properties of a ceria submonolayer (0.7 ML) on Cu(111), of an optically dense layer of ceria (1.5 ML) on Cu(111) and of a ceria submonolayer (0.7 ML) on Pt(111) have been compared. The direct comparison reveals the (metal substrate mediated) spillover mechanism of the ceria reduction by CO in the present CeO2 x/Mefcc(111) model systems. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Heteroepitaxy of Cerium Oxide Thin Films on Cu(111)

An important part of fundamental research in catalysis is based on theoretical and modeling foundations which are closely connected with studies of single-crystalline catalyst surfaces. These so-called model catalysts are often prepared in the form of epitaxial thin films, and characterized using advanced material characterization techniques. This concept provides the fundamental understanding ...

Unique properties of ceria nanoparticles supported on metals: novel inverse ceria/copper catalysts for CO oxidation and the water-gas shift reaction.

Oxides play a central role in important industrial processes, including applications such as the production of renewable energy, remediation of environmental pollutants, and the synthesis of fine chemicals. They were originally used as catalyst supports and were thought to be chemically inert, but now they are used to build catalysts tailored toward improved selectivity and activity in chemical...

Au Interaction with CeO2 (111) Thin Film

The interaction of gold with CeO2(111) layer was investigated with photeelectron spectroscopy (PES) and by means of resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (RPES). Gold was deposited in steps onto a 1.5 nm thick CeO2(111) layer, epitaxially grown on a Cu(111) substrate. The RPES showed a partial Ce → Ce reduction, observed as a resonant enhancement of the 4f level of the Ce species. This can be exp...

Adsorption Properties of Ce/Ag System

Cerium nanopowders doped by a small amount of silver exhibit interesting catalytic properties towards the low temperature oxidation of CO. It is generally believed that a metal support interaction plays an important role in a catalytic process. Therefore in our study we examined electronic and adsorption properties of cerium deposited onto a polycrystalline silver substrate. Layers of approxima...

Polystyrene CuO/Cu2O uniform films inducing MB-degradation under sunlight

This study reports on a Cu-sputtered film on polystyrene (PS) leading to the discoloration/degradation of methylene blue (MB) under low intensity solar simulated irradiation. Direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS) was used to graft uniform, adhesive Cu/Cu oxides on the polystyrene substrate. The kinetics of Cu-PS mediated MB-discoloration adding H2O2 was observed to take place within 90–120...
